{detailed description}Peter Campbell (born in 1937) was educated at Lancing College in Sussex, which overlooks Shoreham Airport, so naturally it was here that he first became involved with light aircraft. After taking his 'A' Level examinations in 1955 he was privileged to land a holiday job with F.G. Miles Ltd. for a few weeks, despite the opposition of both his parents and the headmaster; even now he remembers this as a very happy time. Because of other work commitments, light aviation always had to remain just a hobby until a few years ago, when he began to publish a few specialized books on the subject, including an autobiography covering his favourite decade, the fifties. In 1996 he published Tim Webb's book covering the history of Shoreham Airport, and also arranged the vintage fly-in as part of the airport's 60th anniversary celebrations. "TAILS OF THE FIFTIES" is an absorbing and often amusing anthology of aviation stories and personal memories of the period, as told by the people who were themselves involved with flying, either for pleasure or business, during that time. There are tales of first solos, tea patrols, air racing, rebuilding & restoring, 'spotting,' air displays, adventures both within the U.K. and abroad, and many others. The reader will instantly be transported back to a decade when life seemed that much simpler, when the sun seemed to shine a lot more often and, above all, when flying light aeroplanes was basically fun and relatively free of restrictions.
