{detailed description}At 11.15 a.m., 11th May, 1940, "impregnable" Fort Eben Emael, keystone in the Allied defence system on the German-Dutch-Belgian border, fell to a mysterious assault, prey to an unorthodox weapon. In only 28 hours, 78 German paratroopers captured the fort. A cowed Belgian garrison ten times their number filed from its recesses to become German prisoners for the duration of the war.
Eben Emael silenced, German panzers surged through the gap created in the Belgian defences. One day later Liege fell, ten days later the Belgian King capitulated, precipitating the British debacle at Dunkirk.
Had Eben Emael held, perhaps the German offensive could have been contained.
This book is an hour-by-hour account of the German's little known but brilliant military coup told in absorbing detail for the first time in English. Written with authority and in a vital style, The Fall of Eben Emael discloses the facts behind the attack which had been ordered and masterminded by Hitler himself. Historians and laymen alike will be fascinated by Colonel Mrazek's vivid re-construction of the events that led to one of the most incredible military victories in the annals of war.
