{detailed description}John Fay has been a test pilot and instructor at Westland Aircraft and his book has become the standard popular work on the helicopter. Technical developments have been important and very numerous since it was first published, and this third edition (with an expanded title) has been revised throughout, and a new, long chapter and 54 new diagrams (there are now 165) have been added. The book is thus completely up-to-date.
The book covers the subject in three main sections: the various types of rotor-craft are defined, and the behaviour of the helicopter and its rotors under different conditions are explained; then the techniques of piloting and the problems that face the trainee; finally, the last section traces the aircraft's history from the ancient Chinese to the present day, and includes such items as bifilar absorbers, elastomeric bearings, the A.B.C. rotor and fluidics.
