{detailed description}You need know nothing about aeronautics to learn why the helicopter flies, and the technique of piloting the machine. Colonel Gregory has written a book full of facts, figures and illustrations, supplying all the data necessary for a complete understanding of its development, principles of construction, achievement and potentialities.
Igor Sikorsky in his introduction writes that "there can no longer be any doubt concerning the potentialities of the helicopter; it must be reckoned with as a vehicle of transportation that is bound to influence our mode of living." It may very well come to have a great influence within a short time.
The author has every qualification for writing this book. His courage, foresight and determination have contributed greatly to the development of the helicopter; furthermore, he was the first to carry mail and to land on the deck of a moving ship, and holds the altitude record. In recognition of his technical achievement he received the Thurman H. Bane award from the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences of America.
