{detailed description}The first seaplane was flown successfully off the coast of France in 1910. Since that date the development of seaplanes and flying boats has been one of the most adventurous themes in the history of aviation. In a very short time these versatile aircraft were proving their operational usefulness-in World War I- by originating such naval missions as reconnaissance and patrol, aerial torpedo attacks and minelaying, and air-sea rescue.
By the 1930s the largest and fastest aircraft in the world were seaplanes. Fulfilling also a civil role, floatplanes and flying boats again proved their inestimable military value during World War II, and their development has continued in postwar years.
Seaplanes and Flying Boats is a comprehensive and compelling survey of the fascinating aircraft that have captured the imagination since their earliest beginnings. Lou Casey of the Smithsonian Institution provides an expert analysis, and his text is colourfully illustrated throughout by John Batchelor. With the help of photographs and line drawings this important story of air power at sea is told.
