{detailed description}The Linebacker Raids of 1972 represent one of the most controversial episodes of the Vietnam War. As the withdrawal of US ground forces from the South Vietnamese battlefield accelerated, it became ever more imperative to bring North Vietnam to the conference table. To this end, and to blunt the Communist spring offensive, the US deployed an awesome array of air power. For the first time since 1968, American bombers struck north of the 20th Parallel. Between May and October 1972, more than 150,000 tons of bombs were dropped on North Vietnam. During the second phase, Linebacker II, B-52s spearheaded eleven days of concentrated bombing, hitting 54 targets with 20,000 tons of bombs. By the end of the year, the United States had achieved absolute air superiority over North Vietnam - but back in the USA the raids sparked a new wave of anti-war protest and indignation. This book is a concise account of that highly destructive, but deeply controversial, offensive - the United States' last major aerial campaign of the war. The analytical text, backed by maps and extensive appendices, presents a lucid account of the missions and air combat, as well as providing a revealing overview of the theory and practice of US strategic bombing during the Vietnam War.
