{detailed description}"The Luftwaffe" deals with the German Air Force in much the same way as C. G. Grey's earlier books, British Fighter Planes, Bombers, and Sea-Flyers, have dealt with the R.A.F. and the services from which it grew. It first describes how flying began in Germany, and the state which German service flying had reached before the outbreak of war in 1914: it then sketches the work of the German Air Force in the war 1914-1918.
In the period between wars the author shows how aviation grew in Germany from the time when flying was forbidden after 1918, and how the so-called "Secret Air Force" was built up.
The growth of the Luftwaffe, as we know it to-day, from the time when Hitler came into power, is told with a considerable amount of inside knowledge.
The author's impression of the size of the Luftwaffe differed considerably from the alarmist stories which were published in this country during the years from 1936 onwards. He never believed in the vast size of the Luftwaffe, of which so much was made in print and in Parliament, and nothing which has happened in this war has upset his judgment,—as is shown in the book. Then, as now, he held that if we had gone the right way to work about rearming our own fighting services, especially the R.A.F., we should have had nothing to fear from any German attack. And the events prove that, bad as were some of the German blitzes, we had no reason to fear a successful invasion of this country.
Although the book is not a technical treatise on the construction, performance or qualities of the Luftwaffe aero- planes, there is a list of all the types which the Germans have used up to the time of going to press. It is a book for those who are concerned purely in the historical and political development of the Luftwaffe, and for those who are interested in the strategy and tactics of air war, as well as for the aeronautical enthusiast.
