{detailed description}Designed by the late Sir Barnes Wallis, the Vickers Wellington — 'Wimpy' — was produced in greater quantity than any other British bomber used by the RAF, and gave sterling service from 1938 to 1953. It was the backbone of RAF Bomber Command during the years 1939-43 and saw operational service from the first to the last day of the war in Coastal, Middle East and Far East Commands. The Wellington received universal praise from its crews, not only for its versatility but also for the sheer strength of its unorthodox 'Wallis' geodetic construction which on numerous occasions absorbed frightening battle damage, yet bore its crews back safely.
In this volume Chaz Bowyer traces the technical origins and development of Wallis's brainchild, then concentrates in the main on the experiences and views of those men best qualified to judge the 'Wimpy's' operational contributions — its air and ground crews. In addition he provides plentiful data on squadrons, bases, wartime statistics of production and deliveries to the RAF, bombing facts, U-boat 'kills' et al. The comprehensive text is illustrated by 150 photographs, derived mainly from private sources, with a high proportion of these being previously unpublished.
Overall, this is a highly detailed, well illustrated tribute to one of the RAF's most successful operational aircraft of all time.
