{detailed description}Flying-boats and seaplanes have played a major role in developing world air transport. The air services over the Adriatic and the Mediterranean were for many years operated mainly by flying-boats; the Atlantic and Pacific routes were pioneered by marine aircraft, as was that across the Tasman Sea; and seaplanes have done valuable work in Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia and in South America. The provision of airports throughout much of the world during the Second World War, combined with the then superior performances of landplanes, brought about the withdrawal of the flying-boat from major air routes; but small flying-boats and considerable numbers of seaplanes are still in service where lakes and rivers make their use practicable. All the major flying-boats and seaplanes of the world, since the introduction of the world's first air service in 1914, are described in this book.
