{detailed description}During the death throes of the air war of 1939-1945, the once all-conquering Luftwaffe was forced to the expedient of scraping together a volunteer force of available pilots in one last fling against the now dominant Allied bombers and, in particular, the US 8th Air Force. This is the scenario for 7 April 1945.
If only the remnants of the Luftwaffe could quell the fire from the skies then perhaps the new German jet aircraft could yet manufacture some success. There was a shortage of experienced leaders and capable pilots, of fuel and ammunition, so any action would have to be limited in scope and ambition whilst ideally providing a morale-boosting, shock result.
The chosen target was an 8th Air Force raid. It excluded the need for advanced fighter tactics and would be simple in its conception.
The results of this daring mission are described in detail in this absorbing tale of desperate men taking desperate measures, of unceasing commitment of the type shown by warriors of past centuries, and of - ultimately - a futile gesture by a defeated force. It is the first time that the dramas of this day have been discussed at such length and all students of aviation history will value the insight it provides into the often ignored final days of World War Two.
