{detailed description}World War Two Aircraft Fact Files
This volume is one of two in the Aircraft Fact File series devoted to US Army Air Force fighters of World War II; the division is alphabetical by manufacturer, with the Bell and Curtiss types included in this volume and the Lockheed, North American and Republic types, with others, in the second part. As it happens, this division is largely a chronological one also, for the major entries in this first part are concerned with the initial generation of World War II fighters while the greatly superior second generation-the Lightning, the Mustang and the Thunderbolt-appear in the second volume. By the time the war ended, however, a third generation was emerging-the jet fighter generation-and among the 13 types of fighter included in this Fact File will be found three of these jet fighters, including the Bell P-59, the only American jet type to reach operational (but not combat) service before the end of the war. Comparison between these jet types and such fighters as the Curtiss P-36 and Bell P-39, also described, clearly indicates just how much progress occurred in those few years of wartime effort.
