{detailed description}World War Two Aircraft Fact Files
As Part Two of the US Army Air Force Fighters coverage, this volume describes, alphabetically, the products of manufacturers from Douglas to Vultee, while Part One covers the Bell, Convair and Curtiss products. By coincidence, this arrangement gives an almost chronological division also, with such late-war types as the twin-engined Northrup P-61 Black Widow and the jet-propelled Lockheed P-80 included in Part Two as well as the P-38 Lightning, P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51 Mustang. Several more modern types, existing only as prototypes when the war ended, are also to be found described in this volume, but the bulk of its pages are taken up with accounts of the trio of piston-engined single-seaters already mentioned. As in other Fact Files in this series, the criterion for inclusion of a particular type of aircraft is that it should either have seen operational use during the period of World War II, or that it should have reached flight test as a prototype by the end of the war.
