{detailed description}The US Air Force has an immense range of modern color schemes, with numerous shades of paint for different aircraft and missions. For more than twenty years, Dana Bell has been studying the evolution of American military colors, and in USAF Colors and Markings in the 1990s he offers the subject's first complete and accurate review, now updated to Summer 1993.
Text and drawings from USAF documents are combined with explanations of the variations in field, depot and factory applications, as well as standard data and safety markings. Schematic drawings depict the official schemes for current operational aircraft, some dating back to the 1960s and others developed in the last few years, including Strategic Air Command camouflages and Air Force Special Operations Command's 'Desert Storm' camouflages. The Air Force's standard colors are listed by number, common names and usage. In addition, thirty exact paint chip colors make this an essential reference for aircraft enthusiasts, artists and modelers. Dana Bell is the author of many books on US military organizations and the colors and markings of their aircraft. He has also contributed more than 100 articles to British, Japanese and American aviation and modeling magazines. Since 1981 he has been with the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum, where he is now in charge of the technical document collections and head of the Museum's videodisc project.
