{detailed description}"Wing to Wing" fills an important gap in the history of air warfare and fills it very well. There has been almost nothing published on the vital and unique role played by the Chinese-American Composite Wing in China.
The Chinese-American Composite Wing, though less famous than the Flying Tigers who preceded them in China, achieved an even more remarkable combat record. Here is the first complete history of this extraordinary air combat group, from its first day in training to its final mission.
After rescuing the Chinese Air Force in the early years of World War II with his Flying Tigers, Claire Chennault convinced Washington to continue its anti-Japanese effort with the Chinese-American Composite Wing (CACW), in which American flyers would fly wing to wing with pilots of the Chinese Air Force.
During the last two years of the war, flying American-built P-40 and P-51 fighters and B-25 bombers, the combat crews of the CACW battered the Japanese on the ground and in the air from one end of occupied China to the other. By the end of the war, they numbered eight aces among their fighter pilots, as well as having successfully beaten back the Japanese.
Carl Molesworth has pursued the CACW's story through official air force records and through numerous interviews with members of the CACW. His fascinating tale offers us an in-depth look at a little examined part of World War II.
