{detailed description}The rural county of Lincolnshire can lay claim to being England's premier aviation county. It is the home of the Royal Air Force College at Cranwell, and was host to many thousands of Allied aircrew during the Second World War. The county's illustrious aviation heritage is now a major attraction for aviation enthusiasts and general tourists.
This pictorial chronicles Lincolnshire's strong ties with the worlds of both civil and military aviation from before the First World War. The five sections begin with ballooning in the nineteenth century and continue through the First World War, the inter-war period, the Second World War and post-war to the Tornado, Tucano and Sentry of today.
In addition to the aircraft, the personalities such as B C Hucks, Sir Alan Cobham and Alex Henshaw are included. The photographs, 140 in all, have been selected from local archives and private collections.
For the enthusiast, this is a fascinating gap-filler, and for the interested spectator, it will serve as a most useful introduction to Lincolnshire's diverse aviation history.
