{detailed description}From Fighter Command's heroics during the Battle of Britain to Bomber Command's epic airborne offensive over occupied Europe, the Royal Air Force and later the USAAF were vital to the Allied war effort in World War 2. These could not have operated, how- ever, the massive network of airfields constructed both before the war and also as an emergency measure during hostilities. Some of these bases - such as Biggin Hill and Tangmere - are well-known; others are, perhaps, less familiar. All, however, played their role in ensuring the defeat of Nazi Germany. Although many of these bases reverted to agricultural or industrial use after the war, others remained as operational bases for the RAF or for the US forces based in Britain as part of the NATO forces in Western Europe. Some of the airfields, most notably Heathrow, saw their wartime role changed into a civilian one but at most bases it is likely that some element of their wartime role - either as a simple runway or as a building - survives. In this new addition to the Ian Allan list, Philip Birtles provides a guide to the current status of the airfields operated in Britain during the war. Each entry provides the reader with information about location, status and remains. In addition to the comprehensive text, the book also includes a of photographs to illustrate the various features discussed. This volume will be eagerly sought after by all those interested in aviation history or our industrial and military heritage.
