The German pre-emptive strike on the Soviet Union in June 1941 succeeded in knocking-out literally hundreds of Russian aircraft within hours. By the middle of the war, however, Soviet factories were manufacturing new machines at such a rate that it was taking the Luftwaffe a week to eliminate a single day's output!
