{detailed description}This book is the second in a series of profusely illustrated volumes describing the aircraft color schemes and markings in Hitler's Luftwaffe during the period 1935-45.
Commencing with the first massed air attacks on the British Isles in 1940, this volume describes the changes in the appearance of German aircraft as dictated by the progressive campaign requirements of the Battle of Britain, the Middle East, the Balkans, and the fateful invasion of Russia. Finally it sets the scene for Volume 3 by tracing the containing war in the West up until the beginning of 1943. Volume 3, to be released in early 1977, will deal with Luftwaffe aircraft color schemes from 1943 to 1945, the year of final oblivion.
Just how well qualified Richard Smith and John Gallaspy are will be readily apparent from the amount and sheer quality of new evidence they have assembled for the reader's perusal. As so much new ground is covered, their joint contribution will, without doubt, be recognized by modellers and air historians especially as a major contribution to present knowledge on this often puzzling yet fascinating subject.
This book features a complete list of WW II Luftwaffe unit codes, six black-and-white camouflage diagrams, 33 color photographs and over 300 superb black-and-white photographs.
