From its early days with attacks on the doomed German battleships Scharnhorst and Tirpitz to the raids on the German guns at Wangerooge in the last month of the war the Handley Page Halifax proved itself as the most versatile and durable of the British wartime four-engined bombers. In this book the gallant exploits of many airmen from Britain, the Empire and Commonwealth, from occupied Europe and even from neutral countries are recounted, many from personal narratives.
The Halifaxes of Bomber Command participated in most of the major raids on Germany and enemy-occupied Europe and they were among the first aircraft to be employed in the Pathfinder Force. Apart from bombing, Halifaxes nightly laid mines in enemy waters, flew Allied agents far into occupied territory and dropped arms to partisans. Later with the airborne forces the aircraft carried paratroopers and as a glider-tug performed all the heavy work. Because of their great range, Halifaxes were of especial value for maritime patrols with Coastal Command. Armed with depth-charges, they were a mainstay of the RAF's anti-U-boat action and later took a heavy toll of enemy shipping in the Kattegat and Skagerrak. Their operations into the Atlantic on meteorological reconnaissance went on day after day unceasingly in all weathers. The Halifax was the only British four-engined bomber that could be made suitable to serve in the Middle East and North Africa during the early war years.
This book is a tribute to the many achievements of a great aircraft and the crews that flew in them.
