{detailed description}Concorde is one of the wonders of the modern technical world — the first commercially-successful airliner capable of speeds in excess of Mach 2 (twice the speed of sound). This book marks ten years of supersonic passenger flight, proving beyond question the faith of those who carried the project through to practical reality in the face of fierce opposition.
The author, an active Concorde pilot, gives a detailed account of the history of this most remarkable of civil aircraft, recalling its Anglo-French background and development — the first major aircraft project to be undertaken by such an alliance. The story is traced from inception to prototype construction, through first flights, the pre-production and production aircraft to Concorde's current operations and commercial success.
Chapters outline the theory and dynamics of supersonic flight, chart the history of attempts to break the sound barrier, describe other SST (supersonic transport) projects which never progressed beyond the model stage and the single design which did, Russia's Tupolev Tu 144 `Concordski'. Specifications and data are included, and this book includes an account of a flight from London to New York, from the pilot's point of view.
The text is backed by a wealth of illustrations — most in colour, and many from the archives of the manufacturers and operators — to provide a rounded and enlightened insight into the make up and operations of this most elegant of aircraft.
