{detailed description}The transport aeroplane, or airliner, has changed the world by making it possible to travel between almost any two main cities in a day and a half at the most. This book traces the development of the airliner from the converted bombers of the First World War up to the present, when thousands of 500-600 mph jets, together with numbers of propeller-turbine and piston-engined airliners, carry about 300 million passengers a year. The famous Dutch family of Fokker monoplanes and the equally well-known German Junkers metal aircraft are described as well as the Ford Tri-motor, which made a major contribution to U S air transport. The Boeing, Douglas and Lockheed airliners have their place, as do the British Comet, Viscount, VCIO and Trident, the French Caravelle and the Soviet Tupolevs and Ilyushins. Looking into the future, the final chapter describes the wide-bodied airliners and the supersonic transports such as the Concorde.
